Killer Whales Competitive Swim Team
The Shepherd’s Vineyard Killer Whales is a fun, competitive summer swim team for swimmers ages 4-18. SVKW Swim Team is open to all registered members of the Shepherd’s Vineyard Pool, including non-SV neighborhood residents from local Apex & Cary neighborhoods.
There are swimmers of many different ability levels on our swim team. Please do not feel like your child has to be an expert swimmer to participate and have fun on our team!
However, at the beginning of the season, swimmers must have at least the following skills to join the Killer Whales swim team:
- jump off the side independently
- put their face underwater
- front and back float without flotation device
- Move 15 yards (6/under) through the water unassisted by the pool bottom or lane ropes.
If a 6/under Killer Whale swimmer cannot move 15 yards through the water a few days before the Red/White meet, they may be moved to the Beluga Whales program and we can continue to evaluate their swimming throughout the season.
It is highly recommended that your child has completed formal swimming lessons before joining the swim team at any level. Children that are comfortable being in the water as a result of lessons will be safer and more adept to succeed in a group environment. If your child is under the age of 4, please consider their ability level and comfort in the water. At this age, swim lessons or our Beluga Whale junior swim program may be advised instead of joining the swim team.
