Hello Killer Whales!

You've had another week of hard work and we can’t wait to see you churn up the pool for our upcoming away meet on 7/5 against the Cary Swim Club Imps. In the midst of all your July 4th Independence Day preparations don’t forget about declaring your swimmers for this week’s meet. We have two meet-entry deadlines coming up this week that are open on the sign-up calendar:

If you still have your megaphones from the Welcome Back Party, bring them along to cheer on your team.

Also: mark your calendars for the upcoming Turns Clinic (ages 11+) and our Starts/Finishes clinic (ages 10-), both on Saturday, July 8. Details are below.

Let’s go Killer Whales!

SVKW Board

Adjusted practice days this week

Please note the adjusted practice schedule on our calendar for this week: there’s no practice on Tuesday but we have added a Wednesday morning practice, follow the normal morning practice times for each age group.

Tuesday’s Cary Swim Club Imps Meet:

Weekly reminder: Declare your swimmer by Sunday, Noon. Please only select relays if you know for sure you will participate.

7/15 Cary City Meet Declarations:

Declare your swimmer by Wednesday, Noon for the Cary City Meet in the respective age-group Meet Entry (there are two groups).

Emergencies after the Swimmer Declaration deadline - don’t be a no-show:

The key thing to remember is please communicate your plans to the coaches (not other volunteers) at all times so our heat sheets stay accurate. We cannot stress this enough.

  • Pre-meet: if an emergency arises and a child will be missing all or part of a meet please inform the coaches of the change as soon as possible by e-mailing them at: [email protected]
  • At the meet  if something arises at the meet and you need to suddenly leave: It is crucial that the parent goes to the coaches to let them know that their child is leaving.

Please do not leave without telling the coaches your child will not be swimming any more events - especially in the case of relays.

Check Posterboard Heat Sheets when you Arrive:

When you arrive at the meet, double check the physical posterboard heat sheets on the diving board (not just the app) and if you see an event you will be absent for, please let the coaches know asap so we have time to find a replacement (especially important for relays).

Pre-Meet Warm Up + Volunteer Schedule

Volunteers: watch your email for a note from Anne on specifics and reminders.

Our SVKW Warm up times for away meets start at 5:25pm. Arriving earlier than this to get set up and ready to go on time is strongly advised. Here's the timeline for when you need to be where!

  • Volunteers, check-in as you arrive, by 5:30pm at the latest.
  • 5:25 pm: SVKW Warm-Ups
  • 5:45pm: All Volunteer meetings (ask for location when you check-in)
  • 5:55pm: Team cheer with all swimmers.
  • 5:55pm: 7-8 medley relays line up, all other relay swimmers should stay close by and be ready to go.

SV Volunteer Needs for 7/5:

Meet Information:

TSA Rep: Make sure to find your SVKW TSA Rep if you have any concerns or issues that arise with the other team during our meet. Please refrain from bringing up issues directly with the opposing team coaches, swimmers, and parents.

Location: Cary Swim Club: 808 Tanglewood Drive. The parking lot and pool entrance are accessible only from Tanglewood Drive.

Adult Relay: There will be a Coaches AND Parent Relay after the completion of the Breaststroke. If you're interested in participating email Anne: [email protected] to sign up.

Concessions: The concession stand will be open. We have pizza, hotdogs/hamburgers, barbecue sandwiches (sometimes), baked potatoes, pretzels, chips, candy, and Frozen Ice available for purchase. We ONLY accept cash. You may bring your own food and coolers. No glass is allowed on the pool deck. As per TSA regulations, no alcohol may be brought in or consumed during a TSA event.

Our facility is a NO SMOKING facility, this includes the use of e-cigarettes or vape devices.

Parking & Entrance: Parking is available on our premises as well as across the street at the church parking lot on Tanglewood Drive. We reserve our parking lot for the visiting team. Once our lot fills, please ask your families to use the yellow-striped parking spaces first in the church lot.

Seating: The visiting team usually marks their spot on the side of the pool immediately to the right as you enter the deck area. Your team is welcome to set up their chairs, canopies, etc. in this area. This includes the shelter and the grassy area near the back of the pool. Please DO NOT set up directly behind starting blocks as this is where swimmers will line up for Clerk of Course.

Restricted Areas: The baby/toddler pool, volleyball court, and tennis/multi-sport area are closed during the meet. We will be "roping off" the volleyball court but since it is not fully fenced off nor is this a lighted area For safety reasons we ask parents to please be sure to keep your swimmers and siblings off the sand court.

Coach Highlight: Jathan Persson, Assistant Coach

Jathan has over a decade of swim team experience and now swims for Barton College. Our SVKW swimmers have benefited from the knowledge he brings this summer.

  1. How old were you when you joined your first swim team? I was 4 years old when I joined the Shepherds Vineyard KW swim team, which was my first team ever.
  2. What made you want to coach the SVKW? I loved swimming here as a kid and I wanted to pass that experience on to other kids.
  3. What is your favorite event to swim? My favorite event to swim is the 4x100 freestyle relay. My favorite individual event to swim is the 200 freestyle.
  4. Which stroke took you the longest to master? Breaststroke is my least favorite stroke so I was always reluctant to practice it, I haven't quite mastered it yet, but one day I will.
  5. What is your favorite at-the-pool food/drink?  My favorite food to get from the snack bar as a kid was the freeze pops, so many good memories came from getting those.
